Unlike English, Arabic words must indicate their gender.
In English we can say
She is a teacher.
He is a teacher.
He is a teacher.
- "teacher" is the same into both sentences without considering whether the subject is masculine or feminine.
- It's slightly different in Arabic.
- It's important to know whether you are talking to a man or a woman.
Teacher is pronounced in Arabic as
Mu"allim => masculine
Mu"allima => feminine
Mu"allima => feminine
- The suffix "a", which added to root, changes the root from masculine to feminine
However there are some nouns and adjectives which considered feminine without "a" suffix, e.g.
The sun
Alshshams => feminine
The moon
Alqamar => feminine
